I think there might be some fuzzy math in that graphic. It tells you to buy a total of 3 cubic feet of material to fill the bed with. The bed’s volume is 13.3 cubic feet. That 4 x 4 box is only going to be 2-3 inches deep with the materials purchased.
I don’t use the OFFICIAL(tm) square foot gardening method because I can’t afford “Mel’s Mix”.
Just dirt. Nice rich black topsoil purchased by the truckload. But instead of 16 square feet, I was filling up about 250 square feet when I got started.
This is a very informative and thoughtful share, especially for the novice gardener. Thanks for taking the time to lay out the post as you have done. Good job.
We love our square foot garden which we totally redid this year for free except for purchasing the seeds. We went dumpster diving for the wood to frame the squares, used nails we have on hand, chipped the paths with salvaged wood chips and mixed the dirt with some rich compost we brew at the back of the yard. http://charlieandjo.wordpress.com/2012/03/12/upcycled-chipped-and-ready-to-grow/ Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
I love this graphic…I attempted SFG last year & it was wonderful – I probably could’ve even used my space MORE efficiently than I did. I also don’t use Mel’s mix and it worked just fine…I’m sure it is helpful for someone starting fresh or working with soil that is very depleted. I just tilled up what was already there (yard & grass) and added some topsoil and compost.

What do you use instead of Mel’s Mix?

this is EXACTLY what I need. I’m printing this out to use in a couple of weekends — THANK YOU!
Well done! Thanks for sharing this description of the SQ garden start up.
Really useful thanks – although I don’t use this method at the moment it’s good to know how close to plant things!
Love this.

You have such a big space for your garden. Lucky!
